What Is SES and RAID?

Understanding Enterprise Storage Systems

SES (SCSI Enclosure Services) is a monitoring and control protocol built into enterprise storage enclosures. It allows the system to report and manage fan speeds, power supplies, temperatures, and individual drive status. When paired with compatible software or hardware controllers, SES gives administrators the ability to detect failures before they cause downtime.

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a data protection and performance technology that combines multiple hard drives or SSDs into a unified logical volume. Depending on the RAID level, the system can provide fault tolerance, performance enhancement, or both.

  • RAID 0: Striping for speed — no redundancy
  • RAID 1: Mirroring for redundancy
  • RAID 5: Distributed parity with fault tolerance
  • RAID 6: Dual-parity for extra protection
  • RAID 10: Combines mirroring and striping for speed + redundancy

IronRAID systems support both SES and hardware RAID to deliver intelligent, resilient, and high-performance storage infrastructure for enterprise and mission-critical applications.
